There are several aspects of the website that all work together. The two most common and frequently discussed are domain name and internet service provider (ISP).
Domain Name: This is what is typed in the browser address bar to find your website.
- Domain names can have different extensions. The most common is “.com” but this is only important in terms of name branding and patient recall. Examples include: .com, .org, .gov, .tv
- Domain name selection criteria should be based on search engine ranking and patient recall ability.
- Search engines rank in various ways. MSN, Google and Yahoo! are your primary search engines/directories. One thing that they do look at when ranking is the domain name. This is not the only thing and not necessarily true in all cases. Select a search engine and type in “plastic surgery”, the first page generally includes several sites that all have “plastic” or “surgery” or “plastic surgery” as part of their entire domain name.
- Choose a name that is easy to spell, remember, and portray in print material. For example The Aesthetic Institute may be the practice name, but it is not easy to spell “aesthetic”, therefore this is not a good choice as a domain name.
- You can point several domain names to a single website. Therefore do not limit your purchase to just one. Keep in mind that if you purchase the name for a longer period you receive a greater discount.
- Purchase domain names that are potential uses for your site. There are several places where you can do this. I most often use www.networksolutions.com once you purchase the name, several emails will be sent to you that will include your new username and password. These are very important to your webmaster.
Internet Service Provider (ISP) – This is where your website lives. It is created on your webmasters computer and then uploaded to the ISP. I recommend Interland for your ISP. It is one of the largest ISP’s in the world and has been very reliable and user friendly compared to others. Their website is www.interland.com
